WEST PHILADELPHIA -- A paraplegic man fatally shot his brother while trying to protect his sister from being attacked, Philadelphia police say.

The incident occurred around 3:40 a.m. Sunday on the 5800 block of Filbert Street in West Philadelphia.

The victim's brother tells police 40-year-old John Mapp was physically abusive towards him and his 38-year-old sister.

The brother, 34, tells police Mapp was attacking his sister then came towards him.

That's when, police say, the man's paraplegic brother pulled out a handgun and shot his brother once in the chest.

Mapp was taken by police to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was pronounced dead.

The sister was also taken to HUP for her injuries.

The brother was taken in for questioning, but there has been no word on any charges.
