Grandma thwarts abduction of 3 young boys
Joe Torres reports from Harriman State Park where 3 men in a burgundy van tried to lure 3 young boys.

STONY POINT, New York (WABC) -- New York State Park Police are investigating the attempted lurings of 3 young boys Sunday evening at Lake Welch Beach at Harriman State Park.

Witnesses say three men drove up to the boys, ages 6, 7, and 8 and attempted to grab one of them while they were playing basketball. One of the suspects also tried to lure one of the other boys. The suspects then drove off in what is described as a Chrysler or Dodge minivan, burgundy color, with white NY license plates.

The suspects are described as 3 Hispanic males believed to be in their 30's. One man was wearing a superman shirt and a backwards hat. Another was wearing a white shirt, and a third was wearing a red bandanna.

"The grandmother of the boys yelled to the kids to get out of the van which they did and at that time the van took off. 'So they were in the van?' Two of them were, one wasn't," said Sgt. Steven Huff.

None of the boys were injured.

Parents say it's very easy to lose track of the little ones when weekend crowds pack the beach.

The 'close call' serves as a perfect reminder to once again remind the kids about how to deal with strangers.

"Somebody comes you scream. You don't go with anybody. You don't get in the car and if they talk to you, you come tell us. Or you scream. Scream so you get somebody's attention," said Katherine Bruntfield.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
