YONKERS, New York (WABC) -- A community in Westchester County is mourning the death of a young father who was killed at work, while police search for the killer.

The violent encounter happened in Yonkers at the Showcase Cinemas on Fitzgerald Street around midnight Saturday.

Police say the suspect approached 19-year-old Daij Thomas in the lobby. They fought and his attacker stabbed him in the chest with a knife.

Family and friends gathered at a vigil outside his home to remember him.

"We're going through complete hell. We lost our favorite person ever," said the victim's girlfriend Tia Peterson. "I know he was my favorite. He was my everything. He was my best friend, my boyfriend, the father of my child."

Thomas started working at the theater on Tuesday. Investigators recovered the knife but the search for the suspect continues.

It appears the two may have been known to each other, police said.

The suspect is described as black, about 20, and 6 feet tall, with a thin build.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police investigated at the scene.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call (914) 377-7724.
