Stray bullets riddle home where family was sleeping in Jersey City
AJ Ross reports from Jersey City.

JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- Gunfire erupted in a New Jersey neighborhood sending bullets through a home with a family sleeping inside.

"I just heard one big shot," the mother said.

It was a loud piercing noise that echoed down Woodlawn Avenue early Wednesday morning, and scared the mother of two from her sleep.

She rushed to bring her 5 and 3-year-old sons away from the front window of their first floor apartment.

"I had to snatch them out the bed and run into the other room with them," she said.

She didn't want to show her face on camera, but the panic she felt still lingers, especially after she discovered just how close a bullet came from her young children's bunkbed.

"The next morning I woke up I see the bullet hole from outside and by my air conditioning and by the outlet there was a big hole in the wall," she said. "It was real close. My kids could've been hurt or injured or someone could've got killed."

While she admits gunfire isn't unusual for this neighborhood, this was too close for comfort.

As police continue to investigate, she's now sleeping in the living room providing whatever protection she can for her boys.

"I'm planning on moving, I'm looking for an apartment right now," she said.

The victim says she hopes to move out of her apartment by next month. For now, police do not have any suspects or leads.
