MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- Police are searching for a man and a woman -- believed to be panhandlers -- after a man was slashed at a subway station in Midtown Manhattan Friday afternoon.

EMS responded to Seventh Avenue and 34th Street just after 3 p.m. for a report of possible stabbing.

Authorities say a 51-year-old man was slashed in the back while in a stairwell leading from the street to the platform. The suspects fled the scene.

The victim was rushed to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital in serious but stable condition.

No arrests have been made.

Late Friday, sources said the incident stemmed from a dispute over a low level drug sale.
