HUNTINGTON (WABC) -- There's new information about a police officer on Long Island who is now fighting for his life.

An SUV he pulled over suddenly drove off, hitting him with the side view mirror.

The wild crime spree then crisscrossed through Suffolk County, starting in Huntington and involving Commack and Central Islip.

Into the night police continued to process evidence from the scene where an elderly woman was carjacked, police believe by the same two men who ran over two police officers just moments earlier.

The two men were in a stolen car in Huntington, and one had a warrant out already.

"When they approached the vehicle that she was in, the suspect saw them coming and fled at a high rate of speed striking both officers," said Lt. Edward Reilly, of the Suffolk County Police Department.

The men slammed into another car trying to get away, then drove to Dovecote Lane in Commack, apparently to steal another car. That's where the woman was hijacked.

They drove that car to the Target store in Central Islip, where the men went in to get new clothes to make it easier to avoid police.

"He was eventually located in the Target store in the Central Islip area and placed under arrest and taken into custody. We believe he was evading police and that's why he was in the Target store," Reilly said.

Officer Nicholas Guerrero, 36, suffered a serious head injury and he's in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital. The other officer was not seriously hurt.
