BROOKLYN, N.Y. (WABC) -- A suspect is in custody after running over a police officer's foot and sparking a chase that ended in a crash in Marine Park, Brooklyn.

Randy Edwards, 30, of Brooklyn is charged with assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury.

Police were attempting to pull over his white van because it matched the description of a vehicle used in a robbery. But he ran over a detective's foot while trying to get away at Flatbush Avenue and Beverly Road.

He was taken into custody when his van crashed into a Nissan Versa on Avenue U.

The driver of the Nissan, a 50-year-old off-duty NYPD sergeant, and her 19-year-old daughter were taken to Kings County Hospital in serious condition. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening. A third person in the vehicle, a 19-year-old friend, was less seriously hurt.
