Suspect shot by police during confrontation in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A man apparently trying to elude arrest was shot by police in Brooklyn Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The 36-year-old man, identified as Javon Shipman, was shot in Bedford-Stuyvesant by members of the NYPD's Brooklyn Warrants Squad.

The plainclothes officers were attempting to arrest Shipman, who was in a BMW, for a previous assault.

Shipman started to move the BMW in an apparent attempt to flee the officers, according to police. That's when one shot was fired, striking the suspect in the left arm.

He was hospitalized in stable condition.

Records show Shipman has 21 prior arrests, and served two terms in state prison for robbery. He was released on parole in 2008.

Shipman was wanted for a prior assault, for allegedly hitting his girlfriend in the head with a brick. While officers said they recovered crack from his vehicle, no weapon has yet been found.

Nearby P.S. 23 in Brooklyn was placed on a temporary shelter-in due to the shooting outside.

After the suspect was taken into custody, the shelter-in was lifted. All students and staff are safe.
