YONKERS (WABC) -- Hanging out with his friends on the corner, the 16-year old started to head across the street on crutches when, police say, one suspect with a gun just started firing.

"I was home, and then I heard the shots and thought they were fake, but they were real," Andy Galvez, the victim's friend, said.

Galvez then ran back to his friend, who was shot three times in the face, shoulder and thigh. He feared the worst.

"Oh, I was crying. Because I didn't see him move for a second thought he was dead," Galvez said.

"There are four shots, pop, pop, pop, pop. And I'm back up and I'm sleeping with my kids and he's shaken too," neighbor Babar Zamen said.

The shooting happened around 1:20 a.m. on Friday near the 500 block Van Cortlandt Park Avenue near Coyle Place and Intervale Place.

Investigators say two suspects dressed in dark clothing approached the group of friends and suddenly opened fire.

Trina Whitney was looking out her apartment window when she says the 16-year old victim.

"He was crossing the street on his way home and boom, he just dropped to the ground, covered his face," Trina Whitney said.

The victim's mother, who ran to the scene, yelled to neighbors to call for help.

A number of bullet casings were collected as evidence. The teen's crutches were also at the scene. Friends say he had recent foot surgery.

Neighbors who know the teenager well are puzzled why he was the one who was shot.

"He's not a bad person. He's a good person," Whitney said.

The victim was taken to the hospital where he is in serious but stable condition. His injuries are not life threatening.
