KIPS BAY, Manhattan (WABC) -- Emergency officials rescued a toddler who climbed out of his Manhattan apartment window and onto the fire escape Friday morning.

Bystanders on the street below spotted the 3-year-old boy at about 10:45 a.m. and called 911. The apartment is located at Third Avenue and East 30th Street in Kips Bay.

The NYPD said the young child apparently got a chair and used it to climb out the window. The window was open because the apartment doesn't have air conditioning.

The boy was only wearing a diaper.

The NYPD's Emergency Service Unit was able to get the child off the fire escape and back inside safely. The boy was not hurt.

The boy's mother and older sister were home at the time. Police said the mother was asleep and unaware of what was happening.

Police said ACS is being notified and an investigation is ongoing.

No charges have been filed in the case.
