Daughter steals dad's truck; police chase ends in Glendale crash

GLENDALE, Calif. -- A woman who stole her father's pickup truck led police on a chase from Sylmar to Glendale before crashing the vehicle in the front yard of a house Monday.

Los Angeles Police began pursuing the woman after her father flagged down officers at about 11:40 a.m. The woman, described only as a Sylmar resident in her 20s, had been threatening suicide and had threatened to hurt others. The woman took her father's white pickup truck without his permission and he flagged down officers out of concern for bystanders.

"Her rate of speed was incredibly high," said LAPD Captain Todd Chamberlain. "(The father) informed the officers that there was narcotics use, that there was suicidal possibilities, and also she had stolen the truck."

The female suspect drove southbound on the 5 Freeway into Burbank and Glendale, driving erratically on side streets. Moments later, the truck side-swiped a Honda Civic, causing the truck to swerve and crash into the front yard of a home on Kenneth Road, between Western and Winchester avenues, at about 12:05 p.m.

The suspect was taken into custody, then transported to a local hospital. She had no visible injuries at the end of the pursuit. Police described any injuries she sustained as non-life-threatening.

The driver of the Honda Civic that was struck before the end of the chase also sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Her son ran down the street to help care for his mother.

"She's really shaken up," said Glendale resident Brent Handley. "She just had her normal morning routine, was off to work and five minutes later, I see her car all smashed up down the street."

An ambulance was called to the scene to treat both individuals.

Another vehicle was also side-swiped on the freeway during the pursuit.

The suspect was arrested on multiple charges including felony evading arrest.
