HARLEM (WABC) -- New York City Housing Authority crews are working to fix a literal flood of trouble at a building in Harlem.

Residents at the General Grant Houses tell Eyewitness News that water has been leaking from their pipes, and is coming up from their toilets and bathtubs.

"For the past 4 days, for 4 days. First they said they fixed it, the next day, again it was flooded," said resident Richard Salgado.

The halls on several floors are soaked, with dirty standing water while residents try to clean it up. They are also using buckets to collect gallons of water in several rooms. The elevator water just seems to gush down the doors and flood right in front, all of it ruining residents' belongings. The situation even brought one man, whose bed is soaked to tears.

"I have medication, my heart attack. You see, I'm supposed to sleep. I no sleep," says Jose DeJesus, "all my rugs - everything that was on the floor touching the floor had to go. I threw everything away and had so much stuff that was damaged."

Many residents also fear what is in the dirty water, considering most of it came up from the toilets.

Residents tell Eyewitness News that they have been calling the city for days, and have reported the issues several times, but so far, the problem hasn't been resolved.

"We called the fire department, we called 311 - the fire department came, they couldn't do anything," says Jesenia Guzman.

Eyewitness News saw NYCHA employees inside the building, cleaning up some of the water, but as far as stopping the water from flooding, it is obvious that it has not happened yet.

NYCHA released a statement late Sunday night saying, "NYCHA staff are on the scene are working to address the issue of a stack stoppage."
