Water main break floods street in Lodi
Anthony Johnson reports the gushing water combined with bitter cold to cover the street in Lodi with ice.

LODI (WABC) -- With plunging temperatures, several water main breaks were reported around the area Monday.

One break led to the closure of a street in Lodi, New Jersey, in the morning hours. The 6- or 8-inch break closed Westminster Place between Route 46 and Warren Street and left local residents without water as workers fixed the main.

The water flooded local sidewalks, making for a dangerous situation for drivers and pedestrians.

The water quickly froze, encasing anything in its path. Streets became ice skating rinks as residents tried to make their way around or get out of their driveways.

Crews worked on repairs and tried to keep roads passable, but they faced an uphill battle with the temperatures in the single digits.

Many area residents are off work Monday because of the holiday, and they hope the repairs will be finished soon.

There was a second water main break on Route 9 near the Garden State Parkway in Sayreville affecting traffic in both directions during the evening rush.

And another main broke on Odell Avenue in Yonkers around mid-afternoon.

Odell Avenue is closed to vehicular traffic from North Broadway to Warburton Avenue, and Yonkers police traffic units are posted in the area.

The nursing home at St. John's Hospital is still accessible from North Broadway.

DPW crews are on the scene for repairs, but it is unknown at this time when the work will be completed.

Motorists are advised to use an alternate route if travelling through the area.
