Wild, violent one-man crime spree ends on George Washington Bridge
FORT LEE, N.J. (WABC) -- Even Luis Figueroa's family has a tough time understanding what was going through the 33-year-old's mind.
A stolen Escalade crashed on the George Washington Bridge, only after Figueroa allegedly slammed into two Port Authority police vehicles.
The wild ride began at a house in Hazelton, Pa., early Friday morning.
Police said Figueroa, who has been arrested, abducted a pregnant woman by gunpoint. The woman managed to escape but then Figueroa allegedly abducted another woman and fled in a car on I-80.
Somewhere near the Delaware Water Gap, Figueroa stopped, and either ditched his vehicle or chose to take another vehicle, police said. Figueroa is accused of stealing an off-duty park ranger vehicle.
At that point, the other woman managed to escape. Figueroa, according to police, continued onto Paterson, N.J. He stopped at an auto body shop, which sources said is owned by his cousin.
Police said when a worker refused to trade in Figueroa's stolen car, Figueroa assaulted the worker and set a shed on fire.
"I thought he just had a personal problem with the owners - wow," said Paterson resident Emily Fernandez.
Police said Figueroa stole the white Escalade from the autobody shop and headed toward the George Washington Bridge. His three-state trip quickly came to an end after police said he slammed into Port Authority vehicles at the George Washington Bridge.
Figueroa is currently at the hospital being treated for burns on his arms and chest.
