INWOOD, N.Y. (WABC) -- A woman fell to her death from an apartment building in Inwood overnight.

The 26-year-old woman was reported to have been drinking on the roof of a building in the 100 block of Vermilyea Avenue, police said.

Around at 2:20 a.m., she was climbing down the fire escape to check on a friend in her apartment when she apparently lost her grip. The woman fell to her death in the rear of the building.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was believed to have been intoxicated at the time of the fall, police said. The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy.
