NEWARK (WABC) -- A woman is in critical condition after police say she was stabbed by her husband in their Newark home Friday, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours.

The 59-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times by the 64-year-old suspect, authorities say.

Their 9-year-old grandson was in the home at the time and managed to get out and scream for help.

Neighbors jumped into action to rescue the woman and pulled her onto the grass until ambulances arrived and took her to the hospital.

The suspect had been sitting behind the front door of the home talking to police since about 11:20 a.m., but the standoff ended at about 3:40 p.m. with the man being taken into custody.

He had a knife that he was pointing at his chest and his throat during that time.

Residents who live on Dillard Court, a small dead-end street, were told to stay in their homes while police negotiated with the suspect.

There is no word yet on what led to the stabbing.
