CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Lifeguard whistles went off, and then there was a frantic search in the waters off of Coney Island for several minutes.

Officers say an 11-year-old girl was pulled out of shallow water around West 33rd Street and the Boardwalk. Lifeguards performed CPR until EMTs arrived and rushed her to Coney Island Hospital.

"The grandmother was on the floor looking like she was going into cardiac arrest - it was terrible," says eyewitness Ruth Dean.

"My hat goes off to them. Not only did they go in the water and find her, she was lost in the water. She was under the water. They found her, they brought her unresponsive body to the beach, and when they were done she was breathing. She wasn't responsive, but she as breathing," added eyewitness Rob Lambert.

The incident happened around 1:30 Saturday afternoon. The good news, according to police, is that the girl is in stable condition.
