Dog scared by fireworks found dead along California highway

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- A dog that got spooked by 4th of July fireworks and escaped an outdoor kennel in Santa Clara has been found. The dog, named Java, was hit and killed along Highway 101.

San Jose's Alicia Fremling boarded her two dogs at A Pet Villa Dog Boarding and Grooming while going out of town over holiday weekend.

Employees called her Saturday morning to inform her that Java, a 3-year-old boxer, had gone missing.

Fremling came home to search for her dog. But on Sunday morning the boarding facility called to tell her Java was found dead.

A Pet Villa Dog Boarding and Grooming said it was the first time an incident like this happened and that Java had to jump four fences to get out. They said they are an outdoor boarding facility, which is why Java was kept outside.

"The owner thought that that was a bragging point," Fremling said. "And she proceeded to argue with us about the tragic nature of our loss. And so we've been very disappointed with the owner of this facility and her, just her efforts in this entire crisis."

ABC7 News contacted the pet boarding facility, but they told us they are not commenting at this time.
