It's a boy! Shedd Aquarium's 3-month-old rockhopper penguin chick is quickly reaching new milestones.
The penguin's gender was determined by a genetic test conducted during a recent check-up.
Born June 9, Chick #23, the 23rd rockhopper penguin to be born at Shedd, weighs about 4.5 pounds.
The gender announcement comes as animal care staff prepares for molting season for its Magellanic and rockhopper penguins
Every year, the penguins shed their waterproof feathers over the course of two to three weeks to make room for a brand new coat.

CHICAGO -- A penguin born at Shedd Aquarium is a boy, genetic tests show.

Chick 23, born on June 9, 2015, is the 23rd rockhopper penguin born at the Chicago's Shedd Aquarium. His gender was determined during a recent checkup.

He weighs about 4.5 pounds at three months and is almost as tall as an adult bird.
