More than 120 puppies, kittens saved by North Shore Animal League America

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (WABC) -- There's a life-saving mission for dozens of animals on Long Island, rescued from overcrowded shelters down south.

More than 120 puppies, kittens, dogs and cats arrived at the North Shore Animal League America facility earlier Tuesday night in Port Washington.

They were driven from SPCA shelters in Virginia.

The animals are now getting medical care and will eventually be put up for adoption.

"What an exciting day, over 120 animals lives saved! We joined forces with the American Humane Association and we had three mobile units travel from Martinsville, Virginia back to North Shore Animal League America," said Beth Stern, NSALA spokesperson.

Eyewitness News was told many of the rescued animals were destined to be put down if they couldn't find other shelters to take them in.
