Middle Island (WABC) -- The hunt is on for whomever stole four blind sickly dogs from a pet rescue on Long Island.

The thieves smashed through a door to friends of Freddie pet rescue in Middle Island sometime Sunday into Monday.

One of the dogs was later found running around on some railroad tracks but the other three are still missing.

Those with the pet rescue believe the thieves scoped out the dogs pretending they wanted to adopt them.

Those with the rescue are really worried.

They believe two of the dogs may have been abandoned.

Patrick Sanelli, an associate at Friends of Freddie is concerned they won't be able to survive too long on their own.

"The younger ones can probably survive a little out there. The rain no food and without their meds it's going to be hard for them to keep going."
