Police preparing for debate at Hofstra University on Monday night

HEMPSTEAD, Long Island (WABC) -- Nassau County leaders discussed the security measures that will be in place for Monday night's presidential debate at Hofstra University.

Police have been in full throttle ever since the location for the debate was announced 60 days ago, but had the playbooks from past debates at Hofstra in 2008 and 2012.

But now they say are significantly more concerns, given recent terror plots and violence specifically directed at police within the past year, not to mention a particularly divisive political matchup.

"It's a lot of inflammatory conduct in this election, and that is the first," said Acting Nassau County Police Chief Thomas Krumpter. "The second is, you look at the last year in this country and at the world as a whole, the number of terrorist events, as well as direct assault on law enforcement, you know, the most glaring example is you look at what happened in Dallas, where the police officers were doing their job, protecting the people's right of free speech and they were savagely attacked by a monster. So that's the big difference today."

There will be some road closures near the David Mack Sports Arena where the debate will take place.

--Hempstead Turnpike will be closed between Oak Street and Merrick Avenue, by Eisenhower Park, from 11:30 am to midnight.

--Oak Street will be closed from Hempstead Turnpike north to Westbury Boulevard.- also from 11:30 am to midnight.

--Charles Lindbergh Boulevard and Earl Ovington Boulevard will be closed from 5 a.m. to midnight.

The estimated cost of security to the county is between $1.5 and $2 million, according to the commissioner.
