Up Close: Polly Trottenberg
Up Close, Part 2

New York City's transportation commissioner Polly Trottenberg talked about the renovation of Queens Boulevard, which she called "one of really our signature projects under the mayors Vision Zero initiative."

"We're investing $100 million to really transform what is this very scary 10- to 12-lane-wide highway," she said. "We're going to do all kinds of redesigns to make the street feel safer and more inviting, make it a neighborhood amenity as opposed to just a terrible barrier."

She said that when Mayor Bill de Blasio was first was elected, several pedestrians were hit and killed on the streets of New York, prompting Vision Zero, which promotes street safety.

"We did a lot of roadway redesigns, a lot of enforcement in education," said Trottenberg. "We were able ... to get the city's default speed limit lowered from 30 to 25 and to get the ability to deploy more speed cameras."

"Vision Zero was something we say everyone needs to have a role in -- motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. We're all on these crowded roadways together in New York City."
