NEW YORK -- NYPD officials say they have mounted one of the city's largest security efforts ever for Pope Francis' visit.

The department's top counterterrorism official, John Miller, told reporters on Tuesday that 6,000 additional officers will hit the streets once the pope arrives on Thursday.

Officials said there will be miles of fencing and police barriers in place to secure ticketed events that include a procession through Central Park. The department will deploy nearly 1,200 patrol cars to help control crowds and protect the pope.

Police Commissioner William Bratton said the NYPD also is assigning security details to each of about 200 foreign dignitaries in the city for the United Nations General Assembly. Francis is to appear at the U.N. on Friday.
