New York -- ABC7 celebrates Black History Month, by highlighting some modern day trailblazers.

Misty Copeland electrified the entertainment world last year, when she became the first black woman ever promoted to principal dancer for the world renowned American Ballet Theatre.

A Jamaican immigrant raised in Brooklyn, Maurice Ashley literally became a game-changer in the world of international chess. In 1999, he became the first black person to achieve the rank of grandmaster. At the time, it was a title possessed by less than 500 people on the planet!

ABC7 reminds you that black history is all around us.
