Boy brings superhero cards to NYPD officers with goal of thanking every precinct

WILLIAMSBURG (WABC) -- One youngster from Brooklyn is bringing smiles to the NYPD, on a mission to thank every police precinct in New York City.

Williamsburg resident Zachary Becerra may only be 7 years old, but he knows exactly what he wants to be when he grows up.

"A police officer, then chief, then police commissioner," he said.

When Becerra heard about the deaths of detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, he was crushed.

"He couldn't understand why someone would do that," mom Rosa Ortiz said. "He was like, 'I want to do something.'"

Ortiz had heard about kids writing cards to officers, so she pitched the idea to Bencerra, and it was a done deal. The second grader is now on a mission to spread good will to every single precinct.

"Because I want to make them happy," he said.

Since last winter, pretty much every Saturday, Bencerra and his mother visit a different precinct somewhere in the city so that he can hand deliver superhero cards to the officers thanking them for their service and letting them know they are appreciated.

He's handed out out more than 2,000 thousand of them, and Ortiz has been documenting the visits on her Twitter page.

They started with the 90th Precinct because it's around the corner from where they live, and out of the 77 precincts in the city, they've visited 52 so far.

"The weekend of his birthday, we didn't go anywhere because it was his birthday," Ortiz said. "He was like, 'Mom, we didn't go to any precincts today.' I said, 'It's your birthday. We took one saturday off.'"

While Bencerra has met dozens of officers, there's one person in the department he would be absolutely thrilled to meet -- the police commissioner. Your move, Mr. Bratton.
