New York the 'unhappiest' city

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A lot of New Yorkers seem to wake up on the wrong side of the bed in the city that never sleeps.

New York was just ranked the least happy major city in the country.

Researchers at Harvard and the University of British Columbia factored in income, education, family size and even weather to determine how satisfied people are with their lives.

The other least happy cities were Pittsburgh, Louisville, Milwaukee and Detroit.

Happiness may be a little tricky to define, but the head of psychology at Maimonides Medical Center, gave us some insight.

"What makes one person happy may not make another person happy," said Dr. Alan Hilfer, who works with unhappy people every day.

But he doesn't believe New Yorkers are the least happy. And even if they're not entirely happy, they stay in the city for a number of reasons.

"They stay here because out there is the possibility they will be able to be happy and there's no better place in the world to achieve that than in New York," Hilfer said.

Sure, life might be easier in the top five happiest cities, a list topped by Richmond, Virginia, but they've got nothing on New York.

"In New York there's just so much to do and so much to see!", said one New Yorker.

"Being born and raised here, family and friends, all the ethnicity, it's just great," said another.
