EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Jets quarterback Bryce Petty will have a CT scan Sunday to determine if there's damage to his lungs after he left Saturday night's game with a chest injury.

Petty was sandwiched by Miami Dolphins pass-rushers Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake on the first play of the fourth quarter in the Jets' 34-13 loss at MetLife Stadium.

The second-year quarterback, making his third career start, took three warm-up tosses on the sideline, but he felt "a pretty sharp, burning pain throughout my chest."

Petty was taken to the locker room for X-rays, which were negative, according to the team. He said the CT scan will determine if there's a bruise or puncture in one of his lungs.

"I'll be good -- a little sore, but I'll be fine," Petty said. He was replaced by former starter Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Petty's injury came on a weird play. The ball was snapped earlier than the rest of the offensive line anticipated. Four of the five linemen barely got out of their stance. Suh and Wake were unblocked, with a free path to Petty.

"They hit him pretty hard," coach Todd Bowles said.

Petty appeared to be in some discomfort after the game. He tried to make light of it, saying, "Hey, if I can take a hit from those two guys, I think I'll be all right." Bowles declined to say who'd start next week against the New England Patriots if Petty can't play. It almost certainly would be Fitzpatrick, who was benched two weeks ago, when the team fell to 3-8. The other quarterback on the roster is rookie Christian Hackenberg, who has yet to dress for a game. The organization doesn't believe he's ready to play.

Petty struggled in his second start since being named the No. 1 quarterback. He completed 20 of 36 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown, but he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble on a strip sack.
