HACKENSACK, New Jersey -- A former pro basketball player is accused of scuffling with a pair of police officers in New Jersey.

The Record newspaper reports that 58-year-old William Willoughby was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and other crimes.

Authorities say Hackensack police received a report of a suspicious person and found the former Atlanta Hawks and Brooklyn Nets player. Police say Willoughby was nervous and a struggle ensued when he tried to flee. The officers were treated for shoulder and back injuries.

It's unclear if Willoughby has an attorney who could comment on the charges.

The newspaper says Willoughby was among the first high school basketball players to go to the pros without going to college. The paper reports he was 27 when his career ended.
