Montero, Davies score as Vancouver beats New York in CCL quarters
The Vancouver Whitecaps are through to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League, after beating fellow MLS club New York Red Bulls 2-0 on Thursday night and 3-1 on aggregate over two legs.
The hosts dominated proceedings on the night despite the small margin of victory and were on the board early when Alphonso Davies got on the end of a loose ball in the Red Bulls' penalty area and poked home from six yards out.
The Whitecaps frustrated New York throughout the opening 45 minutes and should have doubled the lead in the 25th minute on the counter-attack,Kekuta Manneh stinging the hands of Red Bulls keeper Luis Robles.
Leading 1-0 at half-time, Vancouver came out on the front foot to start the second half, with new arrival Brek Shea mishitting a volley from from a cross in the 53rd minute after initially playing Manneh through.
Vancouver's other new arrival Fredy Montero, on loan from Chinese Super League clubTianjin TEDA, who put the match to bed. A poor clearance from New York's Sacha Kljestan fell to Montero's feet and the Colombian left no doubt, rifling home a first-time volley to make it 2-0.
Vancouver will face Liga MX club Tigres in the first leg of their semifinal on Tuesday, March 14, with FC Dallas playing Pachuca in the other semi on the same day.
