Young hero who saved neighbors from fire honored by Mets before game

FLUSHING (WABC) -- Mets catcher Anthony Recker hung out with 10-year-old Christopher Schneider on the field Monday night.

The Mets gave Christopher the full run of Citi Field, and took him in the dugout, where he dug into the bubble gum bucket and got to meet a bunch of the players. Christopher's favorite player, David Wright signed his jersey, and Lucas Duda took the batting gloves right out of his pocket and handed them to the 10-year-old, because the Mets know a hero when they see one.

Earlier this month, Christopher saw a bunch of smoke coming out of the house next door to him in Commack.

"I just assumed it was a barbeque or something," said Christopher's father, Russell.

Chris had paid attention in school, and he knew better.

"He actually said 'nope, it must be a fire'!" adds Russell.

Sure enough, the house next door was on fire, and Russell was able to alert the family inside, allowing everyone inside to get out safely.

Days before Chris' grandfather died, the last thing they did together was watch a Mets game.

"Christopher wrote his grandfather 'our own superhero'," says Christopher's mother Lisa.

The story even impressed the Navy, which presented Chris with a flag at the game - one hero to another.
