Driver charged in deadly hit and run in Deer Park, LI

DEER PARK (WABC) -- A Suffolk County woman is facing charges in a hit and run accident that killed a pedestrian.

Police say a car driven by 57-year old Irene Calderaro hit and killed a woman who was crossing Deer Park Avenue Saturday night in Deer Park.

Witnesses said the car stopped, then left the scene before police arrived. The witnesses gave police a description of the vehicle involved, a blue Jeep Liberty.

Officers tracked down both the car and Calderero a short time later on Deer Park Avenue, south of the Long Island Expressway.

Calderaro, 57, was arrested and charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death.

The Jeep was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed this crash or who can assist in identifying the female victim to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
