NEW YORK (WABC) -- If you think the potholes are bad on the FDR, you are not alone. 150,000 drivers take the road every day and they feel your pain on their shocks and tires.

"The FDR is comprised of different pieces, built in different ways, owned by different people and made out of different materials," says NYC Department of Transportation Deputy Commissioner Galileo Orlando.

The City's Department of Transportation announced an ambitious, $11 million resurfacing project for the FDR. Beginning Monday, July 6th, they will grind up and repave the entire drive, section by section. In the end it will feel like velvet, but to get there, brqace for painful, overnight delays from now until winter comes.

"Please be patient while we do work - be nice to the crews who are hard at work," says Polly Trottenberg.

All the work will be done during the overnight hours from midnight until 5 a.m., and will require lane closures. In some cases, two lanes will be closed at a time. The project will be long and complicated, but much needed. Officials explain they have patched so many potholes over the years, they actually can't throw band-aids on the surface anymore.

"We feel it, we know about car insurance, we know about puddles. We know what you're going through," says John Rodriguez of the DOT road crew.
