Police in northern New Jersey are looking for more information about the driver in a hit-and-run wreck that seriously injured a pedestrian.

Authorities said around 6:15 Wednesday morning, at South Washington Avenue and East Clinton Avenue in Bergenfield, Maria Cano, 60, of Teaneck was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. She was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center where she is still being treated.

Cano has a broken leg, fractured pelvis and dozens of stiches on her head.

"She feels so bad. Yesterday, they had a surgery and they put metal about seven or eight screws inside the bone," said Andres Cano, her nephew. "The family feels so bad this happened."

Maria Cano's husband is pleading with the driver to think about the damage he or she has done to the mother and grandmother from Colombia.

Andres Cano agrees. "You got to be honest. If you do something, the accident ... please think about it. Go to the police," he said.

According to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, the vehicle is a Mercedes Benz ML350, ML500, or ML320, year range 2006-2011, and most likely silver or white.

Police said it may have sustained damage on its front passenger side headlamp, bumper or fender. After the impact, the vehicle continued eastbound on East Clinton Avenue towards Tenafly, according to investigators.

Anyone with information about the case should contact the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office at (201) 226-5500 or the Bergenfield Police Department at (201) 387-4000.
