BELLMORE, N.Y. (WABC) -- The Long Island Rail Road suspended service between Babylon and Jamaica Thursday after several passengers climbed from a stopped train onto the tracks.

According to a statement from a LIRR spokesman, the 5:13 p.m. eastbound train to Babylon struck an object just after 6 p.m. It stopped about 1,000 feet east of the Bellmore Station platform.

The crew went to investigate the obstruction and to see if the train had been damaged, but found nothing.

Customers on the train were kept informed by the crew and via social media, but about 10 passengers left the train, climbing onto the tracks to make their way back to the Bellmore platform. The LIRR cut power as a safety precaution and suspended service between Jamaica and Babylon as police tried to remove the passengers from the tracks.

Power was restored around 7:38 p.m. and the train left, arriving nearly two hours behind schedule.

The incident delayed other trains and canceled some. Delays lingered on the Babylon branch throughout the evening.
