New proposal would up residents-only parking spaces at 5 LIRR stations

BELLMORE, Long Island (WABC) -- A new proposal would give Hempstead residents more parking options at some Long Island Rail Road stations.

The parking sticker is a beacon of hope for Town of Hempstead residents.

For non-residents, it could mean some new headaches.

"I will strongly encourage the strict enforcement by the Nassau County Police Department and the Town of Hempstead Public Safety to ensure town of Hempstead parking compliance," said Councilman Gary Hudes, Town of Hempstead.

The Town of Hempstead board will take up a proposal Tuesday that would expand the amount of resident-only parking spaces at five LIRR stations from approximately 2,400 spots to more than 6,400.

"You think getting a parking in a parking lot doesn't dictate your lifestyle, it does because you learn very early on if you're not there at a certain time forget about getting a parking spot," said Bill Cook, an LIRR rider.

If approved, the parking regulations would go into effect April 1st at the Seaford, Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh and Baldwin LIRR stations.

The regulations would be in effect from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

"We think this will make a major difference in the lives of town residents," said Supervisor Anthony Santino, Town of Hempstead.

Only about 1,200 spots will remain for non-residents.

That means many people who drive from Suffolk County into the town of Hempstead to save money on their LIRR ticket will have to park somewhere else.

"The communities where they live is where they should be parking," Santino said.

The parking sticker for town of Hempstead residents will cost $10 a year.

If you park in one of these lots without one you'll be fined $135.
