PARSIPPANY, N.J. (WABC) -- State police in New Jersey have reopened Route 287 in both directions following an investigation of a suspicious package.

The highway was closed between Exit 39 in Hanover Township and Exit 43 in Parsippany-Troy Hills Township.

Police say the item was found at milepost 42 in Boonton.

All traffic was being detoured, but the scene was cleared at 11 a.m. and police began reopening the highway.

The State Police Arson and Bomb Squad was called to the scene to investigate.

The squad determined the package was soft-case luggage containing stuffed animals and trash.
