Signal problems at Penn Station caused LIRR delays, cancellations; service restored

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- MTA says signal failure caused massive delays and cancellations through the evening rush hour on Tuesday.

A number of trains were forced to be cancelled or combined.

At about 5 p.m., the LIRR suspended service into Penn Station to make more room for trains leaving Penn Station. Fortunately, westbound service from Jamaica to Penn Station was restored around 7 p.m.

Commuters took to social media to vent about the delays:

Officials say most people waited 15-30 minutes to take the next available train on their branch. Trains had twice as many people on them because of the cancellations.

Cross honoring of tickets has now ended. The problems also caused some delays on NJ Transit.
