Woman involved in Long Island crash killed after going back to her car

WEST BABYLON, Long Island (WABC) -- A woman whose car crashed on the Southern State Parkway was killed early Sunday when she tried to retrieve property from her car, police say.

At about 3:45 a.m., New York State Police responded to a 911 call of a one car rollover on the parkway westbound at exit 36 in Babylon.

The driver, 25-year old Brittany Leith of North Babylon, climbed from her overturned vehicle and was assisted by other motorists to the north shoulder of the roadway, according to police.

Leith returned to her vehicle in the left lane, and while retrieving property, she was fatally struck by another passing motorist.

As police were securing the scene, a State Police car was struck from behind by another vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing and the New York State Police is requesting anyone with information regarding this accident to contact Troop L Headquarters at 631- 756-3000. All calls will remain confidential.
