Teen bicyclist dies more than week after struck by car at Queens Plaza in Long Island City

LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. (WABC) -- A teenager died more than week after he was struck by a car while riding his bike near a major intersection in Long Island City.

The New York City Police Department said 18-year-old Kevin Lopez died Wednesday. The crash happened July 28 at about 2 p.m. near Queens Plaza North and 29th Street.

Police said Lopez was traveling north on 29th Street in a designated bike lane when the driver of a Mercedes heading west toward the 59th Street Bridge struck him. Lopez was thrown from his bike and into the windshield of the car before landing on the ground.

A passenger in the car told DNAinfo that Lopez darted out in front of the car.

Lopez was taken to the hospital where he died eight days later. He lived down the street near Queensbridge Park.

No one in the car was injured in the crash.

Police said no arrests were made in the case and the investigation is ongoing.
