Storms delaying flights at New York-area airports, several cars stalled in flooded streets

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Thunderstorms producing torrential rain, lightning and hail are delaying flights and disrupting Fourth of July holiday travel at the three major New York City area airports.

The FAA says storms moving through the area Thursday night are holding up flights headed for Newark, La Guardia and Kennedy airports more than 4 hours.

The FAA says departures from Newark are delayed up to 2 hours and 45 minutes and flights out of Kennedy and La Guardia are delayed up to 2 hours.

A flash flood warning is in effect until 9:30 p.m. for all of New York City, Westchester and Nassau counties. Similar warnings are in effect for much of New Jersey.

Flash flooding moved quickly in Bergen County, stalling out cars and frustrating drivers on Bloomfield Avenue in Clifton.

Drivers waded through the knee-deep water saying they thought the water was shallow enough to make it through.

"There was traffic on the road. I was inside the car. I guess the engine stopped working," a driver said.

"How bad did it get?" Eyewitness News asked.

"I don't know maybe, maybe 4 feet," the driver said.

Eyewitness News found the same story on South Main Street on the Wood-Ridge Wallington border.

Police flagged off an underpass to help get tow trucks safely to stranded cars.

Police say let this serve as a warning, just don't take the chance.
