MAHWAH (WABC) -- Crews have rescued the driver from a tractor-trailer that overturned Wednesday afternoon on Route 287 in New Jersey.

The accident happened at about 4:15 p.m. on the flyover ramp from Route 17 North in Mahwah.

The tractor-trailer ended up on a guardrail, with the driver trapped inside.

It took about 45 minutes for police, fire and rescue units to extricate the driver, who was seriously injured.

The accident has caused major delays on both Route 17 and Route 287.

As a result of the accident, Route 287 southbound at the New York/New Jersey interchange is closed, along with the Route 17 flyover.

Police say drivers should expect significant delays for several hours on Route 287 north and Route 17 north and south.
