NEW YORK (WABC) -- The return of colder air and a system to our south is producing snow in the New York area Friday morning.

Snow will fall on much of New Jersey and New York state. A coating to 3 inches is expected, with the lesser amounts to the north of the city and the higher amounts to the south.

The light snow slowed the morning commute in parts of New Jersey. Major highways Friday were mostly clear because they were pre-treated by Transportation Department crews. However, there are slick spots and motorists were urged to use caution.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Ocean, Cumberland, Cape May, Atlantic and southeast Burlington counties where forecasters predicted 2 to 4 inches. Salem, Gloucester, Camden and northwest Burlington counties could receive 1 to 3 inches.

The snow is expected to taper off by the middle of the day.

FRIDAY: Snow into the afternoon, accumulating a coasting to 3 inches. High 38.

SATURDAY: Sun then clouds. High 43.

SUNDAY: AM Shower. High 47.

MONDAY: Milder! High 54.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. High 64.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. High 68.
