Tri-State gets break from brutal winter cold with warmer temperatures
Renee Stoll has more from Long Island City.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- On Sunday, people were busy cleaning up after snowfall overnight that had turned into ice and slush on the roadways. New York City got 3 inches of snow, while other parts of the tri-state area got as much as a half a foot of snow.

There are some speed restrictions in place Sunday on the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, New York State Thruway, and at all Port Authority and MTA crossings. There is some ponding on the roads with slick spots.

Travel conditions were expected to improve during the day, as clouds give way to mostly sunny skies and temperatures rise into the low 40s.

But another round of bitter cold temperatures was expected to move in Sunday night and stay in place for most of the week.

New York City's Department of Sanitation's more than 500 salt spreaders and snow plows hit the streets to clear the way.

Emergency crews were busy all day responding to accidents along the roads and highways.

AJ Ross has more from Englewood:

Snow came down heavy on the Palisades Parkway with slick spots catching more than a few drivers off guard. At one point there were three active accidents along a stretch of the highway.

One car spun out along the southbound lanes near Exit 2 and got trapped in a snowy median. A tow truck pulled the couple inside out and fortunately no one was injured.

However, that wasn't the only close call along the Palisades Saturday afternoon. Another car reportedly turned over in the northbound lanes just hours ago, and the Eyewitness News truck passed a Mercedes stranded atop a mountain of ice along the highway shoulder.
