NEWARK (WABC) -- A 4-foot-long alligator was found dead in a New Jersey park Tuesday morning.

According to the Essex County sheriff, the animal's remains were removed from Weequahic Park by sheriff's officers.

It was discovered at 7 a.m. by a passing jogger who contacted authorities.

"It appears that the reptile may have been someone's pet and was dumped near the park's lake," Sheriff Armando Fontoura said.

He said there have been no recent gator sightings in any county park waterways.

The alligator's remains were turned over to the Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey.
