New Jersey State Police to remember slain trooper

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (WABC) -- Members of the New Jersey State Police are remembering a trooper killed in the line of duty more than 40 years ago by a woman who fled and has been living in Cuba.

Officials on Wednesday will dedicate a monument in East Brunswick in honor of Trooper Werner Foerster.

Joanne Chesimard was convicted of murdering Foerster during a traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike in 1973.

Chesimard escaped from prison in 1979 and eventually ended up in Cuba, where she was granted asylum by Fidel Castro and has been living under the name Assata Shakur.

Chesimard remains on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist List. The FBI and the State Police are offering $2 million for information leading to her capture.
