BROOKLYN (WABC) -- A man was shot in the leg by police serving a search warrant in Brooklyn Wednesday morning.

The 32-year-old was wounded during the execution of the firearms warrant on Pine Street in the East New York section around 7:30 a.m.

Police say members of the NYPD Emergency Service Unit entry team descended a narrow outside stairway to the basement.

After breaching the door, they were met by the subject of the warrant, who refused repeated directions from the officers, according to the NYPD.

While trying to apprehend the man, police say a member of the entry team discharged one round from his service handgun, striking the man in his lower right leg.

He was taken to Brookdale Hospital and is in stable condition.

The detective was not injured but is being checked out.
