Teens arrested with cache of weapons in Ramapo believed to be behind string of car break-ins

RAMAPO (WABC) -- Ramapo police say five armed teens arrested during a traffic stop are believed to be behind a string of car break-ins across several towns.

The teens were taking into custody just before 3:30 a.m. Friday, when a Ramapo police officer on a patrol stopped a car in the Hillcrest area for a traffic violation.

The vehicle was occupied by five males ranging in ages from 14 to 17 years old who were found to be in possession of a Walther P38 handgun, pepper spray, two knives, a bullet-resistant vest and an expandable PR-24 baton.

Also recovered was several pieces of stolen property.

The suspects are believed to be responsible for larcenies from motor vehicles in the Hillcrest, Spring Valley and Clarkstown areas, and police say they may be responsible for other crimes in the area as well.

The investigation is ongoing.
