NEW YORK (WABC) -- It has been a banner year for superheroes at the box office, after Batman fought Superman and Avenger fought Avenger. But now, it's the X-Men's turn to jump into the fray.

But will the latest installment in the series, called X-Men: Apocalypse, live up to the hype? Or receive the kind of criticism that plagued the Dark Knight and the Caped Crusader.

The official start of summer is still a few weeks away, but Hollywood's blockbuster season is already well under way.

Jennifer Lawrence has become a superstar since she first played a mutant, which is why she doesn't spend as much time in blue makeup for this one. She is a natural, and her acting paired with Michael Fassbender's Magneto are reason enough to see it.

The action begins in ancient Egypt with the villain's origin story, but most of the story takes place when Apocalypse reawakens in the 1980s.

James McAvoy is back playing the role of Professor Charles Xavier as a young man, even revealing how the iconic character came to be bald from all of the villain's negative energy.

Oscar Issac is unrecognizable but effective as the very bad mutant hell bent on eliminating the human race.

Fans will see the film whether it comes recommended it or not, and they will leave relatively satisfied even if the film isn't quite as good as it could be.
