Cancer collection box stolen from bakery in Newark

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Police are looking for a suspect who stole a charity collection box from a bakery in Newark, and police are hoping surveillance video will lead them to an arrest.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. on June 8, when authorities say the suspect stole a box meant for taking donations for a colon cancer patient from the Ferry Street business.

The bakery was full of customers at the time, and according to the bakery owner, the box had close to $200 inside. The patient, a single mother, is from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The thief reportedly cased the location, lingering near the counter for about 10 minutes before finding the right moment.

The owner, who did not want to be identified, said the box was secured with a rope to prevent anyone from stealing it. Newark police said the suspect used a lighter and burned through the rope.

Another collection box has been set up, this time chained to the cash register. It is being closely watched.

The suspect was wearing shorts, sneakers and a hoodie with an unusual design. He ran out of the store and fled east on Ferry Street.

The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
